FAQs
Capturing the perfect fingerprint can be a little tricky — but don’t worry, you’re not alone! Below, we’ve put together some tips and visual examples to help you get the best possible print for your keepsake.
What makes a “good” fingerprint?
A good fingerprint will clearly show the lines, swirls, and finer details — these are essential for us to generate a high-quality print for your keepsake.
Good Print Example:
You should see:
Well-defined ridges and swirls
No heavy ink blobs
Even pressure across the whole fingerprint
What does a “bad” fingerprint look like?
Bad Print Example:

Common issues include:
Ink blobs that hide the fingerprint details
Smudging from too much pressure
Incomplete or faint lines
If your print looks more like the bad example, don’t worry — it just means you'll need to try again, and we’ve got some helpful tips for that!
Top Tips for Capturing a Better Print:
Tap gently — a soft press is all you need. If you see a blob, the pressure was too firm or there’s too much ink.
Try multiple attempts on different parts of the paper. You’ll often get the best result on the second or third try.
Choose a calm moment — it's easiest to capture a clean print when your child is calm, sleepy, or even asleep.
Make sure the ink is fresh and you’re using the correct paper from your kit.
Watch Our Step-by-Step Video Guide
We’ve created a short video to show exactly how to take the perfect print. It walks you through everything, from ink application to pressure tips:

Fingerprint FAQs
Yes. We capture all ages, from newborns through to adult sized fingerprints. Our process is suited for most ages, however it is necessary that the fingerprint has visible lines on it.
Newborn fingerprints develop in the womb from 22 weeks, so they will be present on a newborn child. Whilst we have produced keepsakes from as young as a few days old, please note newborn fingerprints can be shallow and fine, so having a close-up check to see if the lines are visible will be able to determine if a print can be captured.
For newborn and children fingerprints, we endeavor to keep these as true to size as possible for the final piece of jewellery. However, if you wish to provide measurements upon the return of your digital prints, please add these into the notes section when you upload them.
For adult prints (which may be larger than our pendants), we use our engraving technology to scale these down, whilst keeping the ratio and fingerprint detail in perfect condition for the final engraving.

For repeat orders, if you have a preference for print scaling, please send through an image of your existing keepsake or provide guidance upon ordering (within the notes section) so we can ensure it is an accurate representation. For instructions on how to place a repeat order view our Ordering FAQs tab below.
Yes! You can use any existing fingerprint, paw print, handprint, or footprint—you don’t need to use a Deja Marc kit. Our kits are simply provided for those who don’t already have a print available.
If you already have a print, just select “No” when asked if you need a kit, and an upload option will appear. Upload a clear image of your print and continue through checkout.
Want to confirm your print quality before placing an order? Simply email it to [email protected], and our team will review it for you.
Yes! You can purchase an ink pad or ink strips from most craft stores and follow the same instructions provided here to capture your fingerprint.
If you don’t have access to ink, there’s also a pencil-and-tape method you can try linked here.
How do I submit my print?
If you haven’t placed an order yet: Once your fingerprint is ready, select “No, I don’t need a fingerprint kit” during checkout. An upload option will appear—simply attach a clear image of your print and continue the order process.
If you’ve already placed an order: Upload your print using the upload function.
Yes, we keep all customers prints on file, unless otherwise asked. We have a lot of customers wishing to use their stored prints for new repeat orders.
All you would need to do is find the item/s that you would like through our website and simply select that you do not need a kit, you will then be prompted to enter the previous order number.
If you would like to have any engraving on the back of your new order just simply add this into the selection that states "Enter Initials, Name Or DOB To Be Engraved"
Handwriting FAQs
Handwriting comes in different sizes and styles, so it is hard to create a fixed word limit.
Our pendants are 16mm by 16mm, so we will make design and placement adjustments in order to ensure the text is legible.
We recommend a maximum of around 3-4 words, however if your handwriting exceeds this, we will reach out to you to find a solution that suits you.
Yes! We can engrave handwriting you already have such as written words in a card, letter from a loved one, signature and many more.
Just upload a clear image of the handwriting via the upload function of the product page.
The handwriting you supply will be replicated exactly onto our jewellery.
We may have to stack the words appropriately where required to ensure the writing is not too small on the pendant.
Pawprint FAQs
If you’re trying to capture a paw print, we understand it can sometimes be a little daunting, so we have produced full instructions and a 'How To' video on our process page.
What is a 'Perfect Print' vs. an 'Unusable Print'?
Unlike a fingerprint, we don't need as much detail within your paw print in order to create a perfect keepsake. It is important to know that the paw print doesn't need to be perfect and we can always tidy your print up for you and remove the smudge!
Good Pawprint:
The pawprint is generally clear with only small issues such as minor smudging around the edges. All paw pads can be identified.

Fair Pawprint:
The pawprint is generally identifiable but significant part of the print aren’t distinguished, making it harder to analyse.

Poor Pawprint:
An unusable paw print would be a print where none of the paw pads are distinguishable or large areas of the paw pads are missing.

Do's:
- Read through the kit instructions carefully and watch the process video for additional information before you start.
- Make sure your pet is groomed and that their paws are clean and dry before you start.
- Use a hard flat surface to capture the prints.
- Use treats to keep your pet happy and pick the right time of day when they're relaxed!
- Use light taps to transfer the ink onto the paper (less is more).
Don'ts:
- If you are not seeing clear pads in the print, try pressing harder.
- Do not roll their paw. Just simply tap it down on the print paper.
Yes! You can use paw prints you already have—whether they were captured in the past or taken recently.
There’s no need to use our Deja Marc paw print kit.
If you have an existing paw print, select No when asked if you need a kit. An upload option will appear—simply attach a clear image of your paw print and proceed with the checkout process.
Our furry friends are just that, furry, so we understand hairs can show up on their prints.
It's important to know that we do tidy up your prints if needed so they don't need to be perfect.
For example, we will remove the hair between their toes, whilst ensuring the design remains aesthetically identical to your prints.

For example, if there is a smudge or a line is broken, don't worry, we will clean this up for you whilst ensuring the design remains aesthetically identical to your prints.
We do not provide this offering on every order due to the volume of prints we complete. However, if you have a unique print with a scar or abstract features you can send a request to see the vector file prior to the engraving process by adding this to the engraving notes.
Process FAQs

We know it’s important for you to capture the best fingerprint, so we have produced full instructions and a How To video on our process page.
Our top tips to capture a fingerprint include:
- If you are capturing a baby or child's fingerprint, we recommend doing this when they are relaxed or sleepy so their little hands are relaxed.
- If you are seeing a dark blob you are pressing too hard. Attempt a tap instead of a hard press. You will probably get a better print on the 2nd or 3rd attempt as if you are seeing blobs it means there is too much ink and the pressure is too hard. It helps to bring the paper to your little one to make it easier to capture the prints.
- Do not roll your finger. Just simply tap it down on the print paper.
It's important to know that we do tidy up your fingerprints so they don't need to be perfect. If there is a smudge or a line is broken, don't worry, we will clean this up for you whilst ensuring the design remains aesthetically identical to your prints.

Bespoke Jewellery FAQs
Yes! We create bespoke engraved designs every day.
From unique fingerprint combinations (e.g., Trio on one side, Handprint on the other) to handwriting, line drawings, and many more—let us know your bespoke design by simply email us at [email protected] to discuss your idea, and we’ll provide a draft order so you can review the cost of your custom creation.
Yes! You can purchase a pendant separately without having to purchase a full necklace. Please head over to our we go to Collections > Pendants.
No, We do not recommend wearing multiple pendants on 1 chain as this can lead to excessive wear and tear from the pendants knocking together.
Due to the sentimental nature of the keepsakes a lovely idea is to wear 2 chains together at different lengths and layering them similar to the below:

Alternatively, we offer a double-sided fingerprint option, where we can place a print on each side of the same pendant. Another option is our Duo pendant, which allows for two half prints on one piece, with room for initials or a name on the reverse.
No, unfortunately our engraving and production processes are set up to only engrave on our Deja Marc Jewellery pieces. We cannot engrave other jewellery from any other store but Deja Marc.
Jewellery & Quality FAQs
Given the sentimental nature of the product, we encourage you to follow these general care rules to ensure a quality and long life of your piece:
- Avoid saltwater, chlorine in pools, soap, perfumes and other creams. Please remove and be mindful of these substances on your jewellery.
- Avoid contact with excess water and steam and do not wear in the shower, while bathing or swimming.
- Protect your jewellery from extreme sunlight and temperatures.
- Remove before doing household cleaning or gardening where chemical sprays are often used.
- Remove your necklace for all sporting activities and physical based exercises.
- Store your jewellery in a safe dry place when not worn.
- This is important in hot climates where humidity, heat and moisture is common and can cause metal tarnishing. We do not recommend storing your jewellery in our gift packaging as humidity can naturally accumulate in the boxes. Our packaging is for transit only. If stored for a long period of time, we recommend this stored in a professional anti tarnish jewellery box.
- To clean and polish use your complimentary anti-tarnish microfibre cloth.
